In a distressing turn of events for Indian cricket, batter Shreyas Iyer is undergoing urgent medical treatment at a hospital in Sydney. Following a serious fall during an ODI against Australia, the Indian vice-captain is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to internal bleeding caused by a spleen laceration.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has swiftly initiated formalities to ensure a member of his family can travel to Sydney and be by his side. While it’s currently unclear if both parents will make the journey, a family representative is expected to reach the hospital as soon as possible, providing much-needed support during this critical time.
Iyer’s condition requires constant monitoring by a dedicated team of doctors in Sydney, with the Indian cricket team’s physician also present to oversee his care. He is expected to remain in the ICU for at least the next two days, with his stay potentially extending to a week if his medical situation does not improve within 48 hours. Doctors are keenly observing for the bleeding to subside before deciding on the next steps in his treatment.
An official statement from the BCCI confirmed the extent of the injury: ‘Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib-cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was immediately hospitalized for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen.’ The statement added that Iyer is ‘under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,’ with the BCCI Medical Team closely consulting with specialists in both Sydney and India to manage his recovery.
