NEW DELHI: Fresh off a magnificent score of 159 for Mumbai in a Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh on Sunday, veteran batsman Ajinkya Rahane didn’t hold back when discussing his national team aspirations. He revealed his disappointment over the lack of communication regarding his potential selection for India’s 2024-25 tour of Australia, emphasizing that he was “fully ready” for the challenge.
Following his impressive 42nd first-class century, Rahane conveyed his strong belief to reporters: ‘I thought an experienced player like me should get more chances. And there was no communication.’ He reiterated his commitment to focusing on what he can control, but stressed, ‘the Indian team needed me in Australia and I was fully ready for it.’
The seasoned campaigner, who famously led India to a Test series victory in Australia in 2021, passionately argued against age being a barrier in cricket. ‘It is not about age, it is about the passion for red-ball cricket,’ he stated. ‘Experience matters in red-ball cricket.’ To illustrate his point, Rahane referenced former Australian batsman Mike Hussey, who achieved great success despite debuting later in his career, underscoring the vital blend of ‘young blood and and know-how’ needed in a team.
Rahane further explained, ‘You cannot go with all newcomers.’ He highlighted the recent stellar performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODIs against Australia as clear evidence that experienced players continue to deliver crucial results in high-pressure situations. ‘I was really happy to see Rohit get a hundred,’ he added with a smile, acknowledging his fellow veteran’s success.
Concluding his interaction, Rahane offered sagely advice to upcoming talent Sarfaraz Khan, who often finds himself discussed in similar selection debates. ‘He should not get distracted,’ Rahane advised. ‘Just keep scoring runs, keep your head down, and control the controllables.’
