In a pivotal third One-Day International against Australia in Sydney, cricket superstar Virat Kohli delivered an exceptional unbeaten 74 runs off 81 balls, guiding India to a resounding nine-wicket victory. His magnificent 168-run partnership with fellow opener Rohit Sharma was a true display of cricketing mastery. This stellar performance has reignited discussions about Kohli’s long-term future in ODI cricket, specifically his chances of featuring in the upcoming 2027 World Cup. Australian stalwart David Warner recently offered his perspective on this exciting prospect.
Kohli’s impressive knock in Sydney was particularly noteworthy as it followed two rare consecutive ducks in the opening matches of the series against Australia. His return to form, combined with Sharma’s support, was instrumental in India successfully chasing down Australia’s target of 238 runs.

David Warner, known for his candid opinions, voiced strong confidence in Kohli’s enduring presence in the sport. He highlighted the Indian captain’s exceptional fitness and unwavering dedication as key factors that could see him through to the next World Cup.
Warner thoughtfully remarked, ‘That’s a question for Virat himself. If his hunger and desire to play are still strong, and he sets his sights on 2027, then there’s absolutely no reason why he couldn’t achieve it. He’s undeniably one of the fittest athletes in cricket, and he balances that with being a wonderful father and husband. From my perspective, I have zero doubts about his capability. The only question is whether that burning passion for training and all the necessary preparations will remain. Knowing his mindset, I wouldn’t ever doubt that for a second.’
Meanwhile, Indian Head Coach Gautam Gambhir offered a more grounded perspective after India’s recent win against West Indies. He stressed the importance of focusing on immediate goals rather than prematurely planning for the distant future.
Gambhir elaborated in a press conference, ‘The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years down the line. It’s crucial for us to concentrate on the present. Virat and Rohit are undoubtedly quality players, and their experience will be invaluable on the upcoming Australian tour. We hope they have a successful run, and more importantly, that the team performs well as a whole.’
Adding to the discussion, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar adopted a cautious stance when announcing the squad for the Australian series, particularly concerning the 2027 World Cup.
Agarkar clarified, ‘Currently, Virat and Rohit are actively playing in this format, and that’s why they were selected. However, regarding the 2027 World Cup, I believe it’s premature to discuss it today. Changes in captaincy naturally lead to such speculation, but our focus remains on the immediate future.’
As these discussions unfold, both Kohli and Sharma continue to dedicate their focus to the ODI format, where their immense experience and consistent performance remain vital assets for the Indian cricket team.
