Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that the immense contributions of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli over the past decade will ensure their legacies remain intact, regardless of when they choose to retire. The legendary duo recently returned to international cricket, focusing solely on One-Day Internationals after stepping away from Tests and T20Is.
Shastri, who mentored both players during their prime, has a deep understanding of their exceptional talent, particularly in challenging conditions like Australia. He firmly stated that their impact extends far beyond just a few years, spanning “a decade, decade and a half in the case of Virat.” He emphasized, “It’s massive and people don’t forget that. And they’ve played against some of the best bowlers that have been part of the game. It’s special. Their legacy will remain. Whether they finish tomorrow or they finish the day after or whenever. That legacy will remain.”
The highly anticipated return of Rohit and Kohli to the international arena since the ICC Champions Trophy Final in March saw them play against Australia in Perth on Sunday. However, their comeback match was a subdued affair. Rohit, playing his 500th international game, scored just 8 runs off 14 balls before edging a delivery from Josh Hazlewood to the slips. Virat Kohli, attempting an elegant drive, was dismissed for an eight-ball duck, caught by Cooper Connolly off Mitchell Starc.
In the rain-affected 26-over game, India managed to post 136/5. Australia, under the leadership of stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh, who scored an unbeaten 46, secured a seven-wicket victory, marking their first ODI win at Perth’s Optus Stadium. India will now aim to bounce back in the second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
