Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden recently shared his insights on Rohit Sharma’s removal as India’s ODI captain, a decision made just before the highly anticipated three-match series against Australia.
This significant leadership shift saw emerging talent Shubman Gill stepping into the role of ODI captain following India’s dominant innings and 140-run victory in the first Test against West Indies.
“Rohit being axed as captain was an interesting move to observe from afar,” Hayden told JioHotstar. “After such a remarkable triumph in the Champions Trophy, I suspect the selectors are primarily focused on the numbers. At 38, with a couple of years remaining until the next World Cup, his age naturally makes him a bit vulnerable.”
Hayden acknowledged Rohit’s immense talent and consistent performance, highlighting his impressive career and India’s team success under his leadership, drawing parallels to the successful eras of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
He further explained the strategic rationale: “However, it’s also a form of insurance policy to elevate Shubman Gill, ensuring he gains experience across all formats. This allows him to learn the nuances of leadership while Rohit Sharma is still actively part of the dressing room. If Rohit makes it to the next World Cup, that would simply be a bonus for the team.”
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are slated to make their international comeback in the upcoming Australia series, marking their first appearance since the 2025 Champions Trophy victory.
“Between Rohit and Virat, you’re looking at a combined experience of almost 600 international games,” Hayden pointed out. “That’s an incredible depth of experience and workload. I truly believe they will have a fantastic opportunity to shine on the excellent pitches available at the beginning of the Australian summer.”
He added, “Everyone Down Under is incredibly excited to see them play, and I expect them to be at their absolute best. With Virat’s thirteen thousand runs and Rohit averaging nearly 50 in one-day cricket across 273 matches, it’s a truly thrilling prospect for fans.”
Hayden stressed the critical importance of a well-rounded team composition in ODI cricket.
“In my view, success in ODI cricket hinges on striking the perfect balance between youthful exuberance and seasoned experience, and that’s precisely what Team India currently possesses,” he remarked.
“The dynamic energy of a player like Jaiswal, combined with the invaluable experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, is crucial. The same principle applies to bowling; you need that young, athletic vigor because 50 overs is a significant duration out on the field. India exhibits a fantastic balance right now – a blend of athleticism, passion, and wisdom. And I’m certain some of the senior players are already envisioning the 2027 World Cup.”
The highly anticipated series opener is scheduled for Sunday at Perth’s magnificent Optus Stadium.
“One undeniable truth about Australian fans is their profound appreciation for top-tier athletes,” Hayden continued. “They’ve embraced and celebrated Virat Kohli as one of their own, and the same affection extends to Rohit Sharma. The atmosphere in the stadiums promises to be magnificent.”
He concluded, “Optus Stadium in Perth is an absolutely breathtaking venue, and with over a million Indians residing and working here, the support will be incredible. They will cheer for Virat, they will cheer for Rohit, and even though many are Australians themselves, they will undoubtedly want to see India emerge victorious.”
