The second day of the Ranji Trophy clash in Thiruvananthapuram was heavily impacted by rain, yet still offered exhilarating moments. Maharashtra managed to put up 239 runs on the board, largely thanks to MD Nidheesh’s exceptional five-wicket haul (5/49).

However, the spotlight quickly shifted to medium-pacer Rajneesh Gurbani. In a masterful display reminiscent of his 2017 Ranji quarterfinals performance against Kerala, Gurbani delivered a potent new-ball burst. With the pitch still damp, he brilliantly trapped opener Akshay Chandran lbw for a duck. Just before the tea break, Gurbani struck again, catching and bowling Kerala’s No.3 batsman, Baba Aparajith.
Rain unfortunately interrupted play at 3:30 PM, allowing only just over 35 overs after the lunch break. Kerala ended the day reeling at 35/3, already trailing Maharashtra by a substantial 204 runs. Despite the challenging conditions, Gurbani’s control, movement, and sharp lines were the highlight of the day.
With overcast skies predicted for the third day and the pitch still offering assistance to the bowlers, the match remains finely balanced. Kerala’s pacer N Basil, however, expressed optimism. “We had one bad session today. Confident of turning it around tomorrow. Even our No.11 can bat,” Basil stated, adding, “My aim is to win at least three games for Kerala this season.”
Kerala’s middle order will need to show immense resilience against Maharashtra’s renewed momentum, especially with Gurbani looking dangerous. The morning session of the third day promises to be pivotal in determining the outcome of this enthralling encounter.
Brief Scores: Maharashtra 239 (R Gaikwad 91, J Saxena 49, MD Nidheesh 5/49) lead Kerala 35/3 (R Gurbani 2/20) by 204 runs at stumps on Day 2.
