Bumrah’s Playful Jibe: ‘You Know It’s Out, But…’ After Dramatic DRS Call in India vs West Indies Test

The second Test between India and the West Indies on Day 4 saw a memorable and rather dramatic turn of events. India, having enforced the follow-on, found themselves battling a resilient West Indies batting lineup, making breakthroughs incredibly challenging.

The pivotal moment occurred in the 55th over when Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sharp ball that struck John Campbell’s pads as he attempted a drive. A confident LBW appeal from the Indian team was promptly turned down by umpire Richard Illingworth. India, certain of a dismissal, opted for a DRS review.

However, the third umpire, Alex Wharf, reviewing the UltraEdge, detected a faint spike as the ball passed both bat and pad. He subsequently upheld the on-field umpire’s not-out decision, ruling an inside edge. Campbell, who had been playing a patient innings, continued his resistance, having seemingly caught the ball on the edge of his bat before it made contact with his pads.

Following the disappointing outcome of the review, Bumrah’s reaction was a classic blend of frustration and good-natured amusement. As he walked back to his bowling mark, a wide smile spread across his face, and he was heard quipping to umpire Illingworth, “You know it’s out. But the technology can’t prove it.” This witty exchange, picked up by the stump mic, brought a moment of levity and laughter to the commentary box amidst the intense Test match.

Despite India’s persistent efforts, the West Indies batsmen maintained their composure and continued to frustrate the bowling attack. By the close of 57 overs on Day 4, John Campbell remained unbeaten on a solid 94 runs from 172 balls, while Shai Hope provided excellent support with 73 runs from 124 balls. Their steadfast partnership proved crucial in anchoring the innings and preventing India from securing further breakthroughs.

Bumrah’s memorable remark served as a highlight, perfectly encapsulating his competitive spirit mixed with a touch of humor, a trait often appreciated by fans and fellow players alike in the high-stakes world of Test cricket.
