Former Australia Captain’s Bold ODI Series Prediction for Shubman Gill’s India

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has weighed in on the highly anticipated One-Day International series between India and Australia, predicting a tight battle. Surprisingly, he leaned towards a 2-1 victory for his home country.

India’s selectors recently announced a full-strength 15-member squad for the three-match series, which is set to commence on October 19 in Perth. This series marks a significant leadership transition for Indian cricket, with the 26-year-old Shubman Gill stepping into the ODI captain’s role, taking over from Rohit Sharma. This move is part of a broader long-term strategy, with an eye on the 2027 World Cup.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the squad, bringing valuable experience to support Gill, who also currently leads India’s Test team. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain for the series, which will also feature matches in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Speaking to ICC Digital from Colombo, where he is providing commentary for the ICC Women’s World Cup, Finch shared his early insights. “It will be a fantastic series,” Finch commented. “It always is when India and Australia face off, and I believe having Virat back will truly bring out the best in him against Australia.”

The former Australian opener, a key member of the 2015 World Cup-winning team, acknowledged the perceived balance between the two sides but ultimately gave the edge to his former team. “On paper, it always looks like a great contest, very evenly matched,” he stated, “but I’d predict Australia to win 2-1. It’s not a confident prediction, as India is an excellent side, and it promises to be a great series to watch.”

Finch also expressed strong confidence in Gill’s leadership abilities as India enters this new era. “Shubman has already demonstrated his strong leadership in T20 and Test cricket, so I’m certain his ODI captaincy will be no different,” Finch added.

He further emphasized that the presence of seasoned players like Rohit and Kohli would be crucial for the young captain’s seamless transition. “I think having those experienced guys around will provide a real sense of calm for him,” Finch explained, “offering him the opportunity to exchange ideas, both on and off the field, on how he envisions the team moving forward.”

After the ODI series concludes, India is scheduled to play a five-match T20 International series, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the team following their recent Asia Cup triumph.
