A significant change has swept through Indian cricket: Shubman Gill has been officially named India’s new One Day International (ODI) captain. This appointment comes just before the upcoming three-match series against Australia, set to kick off on October 19th. The 26-year-old Gill, who already holds the Test captaincy, will now lead the national side in both Tests and ODIs. In the T20I format, he will serve as vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, consolidating command across multiple formats.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar from the BCCI clarified the rationale behind this decision, stating, “It was practically impossible to continue with three different captains across formats.”
This leadership transition marks the end of a glorious era for Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain.
Interestingly, this shift occurs despite Rohit Sharma’s recent triumph leading India to victory in the Champions Trophy in March. The 38-year-old veteran will still feature in the squad for the Australia tour, but as a specialist batter, alongside Virat Kohli.
Adding a touch of nostalgia to the news, an old social media post from Rohit Sharma has resurfaced and gone viral. More than 13 years ago, the former captain had shared a cryptic message on X (previously Twitter): “End of an era (45) and the start of a new one (77).” Fans quickly realized these numbers correspond to their jersey numbers, with Rohit wearing 45 and Gill sporting 77, making the post eerily prophetic.

Further significant squad announcements include Shreyas Iyer stepping in as the vice-captain for the ODI team. Wicketkeeping responsibilities will be split between KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, as both Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are not included in the current squad. Speculation suggests Pant’s absence might be due to ongoing fitness issues.
At the top of the batting order, Rohit Sharma will open alongside the new captain, Shubman Gill. Promising talent Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been brought in as a backup opener. The selection committee has also implemented substantial changes within the bowling attack.
Notably, Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakaravarthy have been omitted from the squad, despite their commendable performances in the recent Champions Trophy. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has also been left out of the ODI setup, a move that could potentially signal the conclusion of his international career in this format.
This highly anticipated three-match ODI series against Australia will serve as Gill’s inaugural challenge as the full-time ODI captain. He will be at the helm of a diverse team, blending seasoned campaigners with emerging young talents. This series isn’t just a set of matches; it signifies the dawn of a fresh chapter in Indian cricket, complete with evolving leadership dynamics.
Overall, this leadership restructuring is arguably one of the most impactful transitions in recent Indian cricket history, particularly given Rohit Sharma’s successful run as captain across various formats. The selectors’ choice to entrust Gill with captaincy in both Tests and ODIs, while wisely retaining the expertise of veterans, underscores a clear focus on long-term strategic planning while ensuring the team remains competitive and robust in the present.
