In a dazzling display of all-round cricket, Ravindra Jadeja once again proved his mettle, steering India to a commanding win against West Indies in the first Test at Ahmedabad. His incredible efforts, featuring an unbeaten century with the bat and a crucial four-wicket haul in the second innings, rightfully earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Following his spectacular performance, Jadeja was asked about the growing excitement and comparisons to legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev’s remarkable record of 400 Test wickets and 5,000 runs.
With his characteristic humility and a smile, Jadeja playfully deflected the pressure. "Sir, you are putting pressure on me now (laughs)," he quipped. "Now I would have to think of scoring 1,000 more runs or so and taking 60-70 more wickets. At this stage of my career, I’m just enjoying my cricket. I’m not thinking about milestones and records; my focus is purely on my fitness and enjoying the game. I consistently work on my fitness to ensure I can continue performing at this level for many years to come."
Jadeja’s career statistics truly highlight his immense value to the team. In 86 Tests, he has accumulated 3,990 runs at an impressive average of 38.73, including six centuries and 27 half-centuries. With the ball, he has claimed 334 wickets at an average of 25.07, boasting 15 five-wicket hauls and three instances of ten wickets in a match.
Discussing his improved batting form, Jadeja attributed his success to batting at a higher position. "I had been batting at number 8 and 9 a few years ago, but now I’ve secured my place at number 6. This gives me ample time to prepare and pace my innings effectively. I don’t feel the need to hurry or rush unnecessarily," he explained.
The match saw India establish early dominance. The West Indies were bowled out for just 162 in their first innings, thanks to incisive bowling from Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar, who expertly exploited a favorable wicket. In response, India posted a formidable total of 448/5 declared, with centuries from KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Jadeja (104) building a massive lead. The visitors then collapsed in their second innings, managing only 146 runs, sealing an innings and 140-run victory for India.
Jadeja also commended the team management and Captain Shubman Gill, emphasizing the collective spirit and support within the spin unit. "Everyone is experienced enough, so there’s no need for unnecessary suggestions," he noted. "Everyone is working hard and maintaining a positive attitude, which is fantastic to see."
