Mohsin Naqvi, currently embroiled in controversy after a contentious incident at the Asia Cup trophy presentation and Pakistan’s poor performance, is reportedly being pressured to relinquish one of his high-profile positions: either as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or as the country’s Interior Minister. Critics argue that he has struggled to effectively manage both demanding roles.
Former all-rounder Shahid Afridi has explicitly urged Naqvi to make a choice following the recent Asia Cup debacle. Further complicating matters, Naqvi also holds the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Pakistan concluded the regional tournament as runners-up, but the team’s repeated defeats to India have ignited widespread criticism, targeting both the batting performance and the leadership of the PCB. Naqvi’s tenure as head of the board is now under intense scrutiny, according to a report by Telecom Asia Sport.
Afridi emphasized the demanding nature of both roles, stating, “My request or advice to Naqvi Saheb is that you have two very important posts, and they are big jobs and need time. PCB is totally different from the Interior Ministry, so they must be kept separate.”
He stressed the urgency of a decision, adding, “It would be a big decision and should be taken as soon as possible. Pakistan cricket needs special attention and time.” Afridi also openly criticized Naqvi’s current advisors, stating, “Naqvi cannot rely totally on advisers. These advisers are taking him nowhere, and he himself admits he doesn’t know much about cricket.”
Afridi strongly advocated for a change in advisory, urging, “He needs to appoint good and knowledgeable advisers who understand the game.” Reports indicate that Afridi has consistently voiced his concerns about Naqvi holding dual posts, but his warnings have largely been ignored. Sources suggest that Afridi even escalated his concerns to the country’s army chief, recommending that Naqvi step down from one of his positions to ensure proper focus on the other.
