The Assam government is actively searching for a fitting cremation site in or near Guwahati for the renowned singer Zubeen Garg. State Minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Sunday, September 21, 2025, that the government would present several options to Garg’s family for their ultimate decision.
Minister Pegu also clarified that the selection process involves considering locations suitable not only for the cremation but also for establishing a permanent memorial in honor of the cultural legend. Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on Friday, September 19, in Singapore while swimming in the sea.
“We discussed Sonapur as a potential site yesterday, and we are exploring other suitable locations too,” Mr. Pegu informed reporters after personally inspecting the Sonapur site, located on the outskirts of Guwahati. He further stated that senior officials are also evaluating additional spots, and all collected options will be presented to Garg’s grieving family.
“The family will review these choices and make the final determination. After their decision, the chosen site will be formally announced following this evening’s cabinet meeting,” the State minister elaborated.
There has been a notable request for Garg’s final resting place to be in Jorhat, the Upper Assam town where he spent his formative years and which is widely recognized as the birthplace of his creative journey.
Nevertheless, insiders close to the family suggest that Guwahati or its surrounding areas are the more probable choice. This is primarily due to the considerable distance of over 300 kilometers from the capital city to Jorhat, which would pose significant travel difficulties for Garg’s octogenarian father.
Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains arrived in New Delhi at Indira Gandhi International Airport around midnight on Saturday, September 20, following their journey from Singapore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was present in the capital to receive the body and offer his heartfelt tributes.
Accompanying the Chief Minister were Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, and other high-ranking Assam Government officials stationed in New Delhi.
Subsequently, the mortal remains arrived at Guwahati airport early on Sunday, September 21. After family members pay their respects at their Kahilipara residence, the body will be moved to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah sports complex in the city for public homage, allowing thousands of fans to bid their final farewell.
