Rajampet MP and Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader P.V. Midhun Reddy has formally requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the alarming increase of spurious liquor incidents across Andhra Pradesh. He characterized this dangerous trend as a “large-scale, organized inter-State crime” that urgently requires intervention from Central authorities.
In a letter dated Thursday, October 9, 2025, Mr. Reddy conveyed his deep concern that adulterated liquor, often containing toxic chemicals like methanol, is tragically claiming lives not only within Andhra Pradesh but also in neighboring states. He highlighted that the most impoverished segments of society are particularly vulnerable, falling victim to counterfeit bottles deceptively marketed under well-known brand labels.
To underscore the severity of the issue, the MP pointed to recent successful enforcement operations that have uncovered clandestine distillation units. One such unit, located in Mulakalacheruvu within his own Annamayya district, was busted, leading to the seizure of substantial quantities of fake liquor bottles, caps, and packaging materials. These findings strongly indicate the presence of a sophisticated and well-coordinated criminal network operating across multiple districts and state lines.
Mr. Reddy implored the Union Home Ministry to launch a thorough and comprehensive investigation, advocating for close collaboration between the CBI and various other agencies. These include the Narcotics Control Bureau, State Police, Excise Department, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Furthermore, Mr. Reddy stressed the need for enhanced regulation of industrial alcohol to prevent its diversion for illegal purposes. He also called for the implementation of more effective mechanisms and improved intelligence-sharing protocols among states to successfully dismantle this insidious spurious liquor mafia, which poses a significant threat to both public health and law enforcement efforts.
