In a shocking development, Haryana Police have booked Mohammad Mustafa, a retired Director General of Police from Punjab, and his wife, former minister Razia Sultana, in connection with the alleged murder of their 35-year-old son, Aqil Akhtar. The incident took a grim turn after a family acquaintance revealed explosive social media posts made by Aqil in August, detailing his fears and accusations against his own family.
Aqil, whose father Mustafa is a retired 1985-batch IPS officer and former Punjab Human Rights Commission DGP, and whose mother Razia Sultana served as a minister in the previous Punjab Congress government, had alleged a conspiracy against him. In videos reportedly recorded weeks before his death, Aqil claimed his father and mother were involved in an affair and that his family was plotting to either frame him in a false case or have him killed. He stated, “Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or to have me killed.” He also alleged illegal confinement and threats of being framed in criminal cases.
In a subsequent video, Aqil appeared to retract some of his statements, attributing them to mental illness. However, the recording ended with him expressing fear, “Will they get me killed? They are all scoundrels.” Despite this, he also acknowledged his struggles with schizophrenia, apologizing and expressing gratitude for his family.
Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police Srishti Gupta confirmed that the First Information Report (FIR) was filed based on a complaint that family members played a role in his death, with social media posts, videos, and photographs raising suspicion. Aqil is survived by his wife and two young children.
