West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales faced disciplinary action on Sunday, October 12, 2025, receiving a 25% fine of his match fee and a demerit point from the International Cricket Council (ICC). This penalty was imposed for a breach of the Level 1 Code of Conduct during the opening day of the second Test match against India in New Delhi.
The incident in question took place on Friday, October 10, during India’s first innings. In the 29th over, Seales fielded the ball in his follow-through and aggressively threw it towards Indian batter Yashaswi Jaiswal, striking him on the pads.
An official media release from the ICC confirmed that Seales violated Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article specifically addresses ‘throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.’
This penalty adds another demerit point to Seales’ record, bringing his total to two within a 24-month period. His previous demerit point was issued during a Test match against Bangladesh in December 2024.
Initially, Seales contested the sanction put forth by match referee Andy Pycroft, necessitating a formal hearing. Seales argued that his action was an attempt at a run-out.
However, after reviewing replay clips from various angles, the match referee concluded that the throw was unnecessary and inappropriate, particularly as it struck the batter on the pads while he was safely within his crease, as detailed in the ICC release.
The charge against Seales was brought forward by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Reiffel, alongside third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan.
According to ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, with a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, and the assignment of either one or two demerit points.
