A peaceful demonstration in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, turned into chaos on Monday, September 29, 2025, following the appearance of ‘I Love Muhammad’ graffiti on a public road. The protest quickly escalated into violence, leading police to use baton charges to disperse a stone-pelting crowd, according to official reports.
Even after authorities arrested one individual in connection with the controversial graffiti, demonstrators blocked the vital Ahilyanagar-Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar highway, causing significant disruption.
An official statement detailed the day’s events: “The unrest started this morning in the Kotla area of Kotwali after graffiti declaring ‘I Love Muhammad’ was found on the road. This immediately drew strong objections from members of the Muslim community, prompting a formal complaint at the Kotwali police station.”
The official continued, “Despite an arrest being made, a segment of the crowd continued to protest. When police appealed for calm and order, some individuals began pelting stones. In response, law enforcement used lathi-charges to restore peace and disperse the unruly mob.”
Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police, Somnath Gharge, confirmed that at least 30 people have been taken into custody in connection with the protests, road blockades, and stone-pelting incidents.
Gharge further stated, “We were compelled to use force to uphold law and order. The police are actively pursuing action against all those involved. The situation is now under control, and we urge citizens not to heed or spread baseless rumors.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, currently on tour in Yavatmal, addressed the incident. He emphasized that authorities would investigate whether a deliberate conspiracy to disrupt social harmony and polarize society through such provocative displays was at play.
“While every individual has the freedom to practice their religion, this freedom does not extend to engaging in activities that promote polarization,” the Chief Minister firmly asserted.
