In a groundbreaking move to revitalize tourism in the pristine Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the passenger vessel ‘Sindhu’ has proudly completed its first-ever round trip to Barren Island, home to India’s only active volcano. The ship, which departed from Haddo Wharf in Port Blair, returned triumphantly on Sunday, October 26, 2025, marking a new chapter for island adventures.
The maiden voyage was officially flagged off by Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar on the evening of October 24, 2025. Barren Island, an uninhabited volcanic marvel situated approximately 140 km from Port Blair, holds geological significance as it lies at the dynamic intersection of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates.
Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar shared his excitement, stating that “The ship returned safely with all tourists and school children on Saturday, October 25, 2025. This marks the first instance where the Union Territory Administration has launched such a dedicated service for travelers to experience the island.”
This initiative isn’t a one-off event. Officials confirmed that two such voyages will be operated every month, providing both local islanders and curious tourists with an unparalleled opportunity to behold one of nature’s most spectacular sights amidst the stunning waters of the Andaman Sea.
The ‘Sindhu’, boasting a capacity for 500 passengers, sailed nearly full. Notably, among its passengers were 125 government school students from various parts of the archipelago, making it an educational and memorable journey for them.
Travelers expressed immense delight over the experience. Archana Devi, one of the passengers, exclaimed, “Watching the volcano from just a few nautical miles away is amazing!” Fellow tourists Monideepa Chowdhury and S. Pillai extended their gratitude to the crew for a truly wonderful trip.
Mr. Chowdhury further praised the journey, remarking, “Love Andaman. The staffers were extremely courteous, the vessel was clean, and the food was delicious. Looking forward to undertaking the next journey on board Sindhu.”
The adventure began on Friday evening, October 24. As dawn broke the following day, passengers were treated to a breathtaking spectacle: the active volcano of Barren Island emerging into view, its crest glowing a vivid red, as detailed in an official statement.
The next morning, the ship gracefully circled the island, ensuring every passenger had a panoramic view of the volcanic splendor and the mesmerizing sunrise painting the sea. “The vessel commenced its return voyage at 8 a.m., reaching Port Blair by 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, concluding an extraordinary and historic journey,” Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar recounted.
Passengers have a choice of four accommodation categories. The ‘Coral Suite’ and ‘Reef Suite’ are priced at approximately ₹8,310 and ₹6,340 per person, respectively. More economical options include the ‘Island Breeze’ and ‘Lagoon’ categories, costing around ₹4,290 and ₹3,180 per head.
An additional charge of ₹2,000 per passenger covers food for the entire round voyage, ensuring a comfortable and comprehensive experience.
This innovative service represents a significant leap forward for the tourism sector in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, promising to attract more visitors to its unique natural wonders, as highlighted by the Chief Secretary.
