In a strong show of condemnation, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and Chidambaram Member of Parliament, Thol. Thirumavalavan, led a demonstration outside the Madras High Court campus in Chennai. The protest on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, was held in response to a shocking incident: the attempted physical attack on the Chief Justice of India, B.R. Gavai, by a 71-year-old lawyer during Supreme Court proceedings just the day before.
The protesters vociferously demanded that a criminal case be registered against the lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore. Kishore had not only made an attempt to attack but also reportedly shouted slogans related to ‘Sanatana’ within the sacred confines of the court hall. The VCK and its supporters insisted on invoking serious charges under both the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967. This incident has also prompted reactions from top political figures, with Prime Minister Modi reportedly contacting the Chief Justice to express his dismay, stating that the incident had ‘angered all Indians’.
Adding weight to the protest, G. Mohanakrishnan, the president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association, also participated, standing in solidarity with the demand for justice and accountability.
