Despite repeated assurances from Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials that the Varthur Main Road (State Highway–35) reconstruction would be fast-tracked, local residents report a complete lack of progress on the ground.
In response, concerned citizens have once again formally appealed to the Urban Development Department via the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), urgently calling for direct intervention.
Communities across Varthur, Gunjur, Balagere, and neighboring localities highlight that this vital East Bengaluru state highway has deteriorated into an unsafe and almost impassable route. Massive potholes, uneven surfaces, and persistent flooding during monsoon seasons pose significant risks to thousands of daily commuters, from schoolchildren to elderly residents.
The dilapidated road creates hazardous conditions for motorcyclists and pedestrians alike. Critical services, such as ambulances, and daily transport for students on school buses frequently experience delays, trapped in the gridlock caused by the road’s dismal state.
While the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) was tasked with the reconstruction and expansion of the highway, overseen by the GBA, residents claim that no meaningful work has been initiated. They express frustration that, despite numerous promises, the road conditions only continue to worsen.
The collective letter from residents points to a critical lack of coordination between KRDCL and GBA as the primary reason for their ongoing suffering.
Beyond mere repair, residents are imploring the government to fast-track the project with a focus on scientific design, durable materials, and proper sub-grade compaction. Their petition also advocates for the comprehensive development of a ‘Green Corridor,’ incorporating essential storm-water drains, safe pedestrian footpaths, clear lane markings, effective street lighting, and aesthetically pleasing roadside greenery for a truly sustainable infrastructure solution.
