V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, launched a scathing attack on the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, accusing them of actively fostering ‘majoritarian communalism’ to create division and animosity within society. Speaking at a United Democratic Front (UDF) public rally held to kickstart their election campaign, Satheesan unequivocally stated the UDF’s unwavering dedication to secular principles.
He drew parallels between the LDF’s alleged tactics and those of the Sangh Parivar, claiming the LDF employs individuals to spread majoritarian narratives. “The UDF’s commitment to secularism is absolute; we will never compromise on it, not even for a handful of votes,” he asserted, a declaration met with enthusiastic applause from the assembled crowd.
Satheesan then shifted his focus to the controversial Sabarimala issue. He questioned the genuine intent behind the government’s recent efforts to promote the revered hill shrine as a global pilgrimage destination, suggesting it was a belated and insincere move. He challenged the government, asking, “If they are truly dedicated to Sabarimala’s development, why don’t they withdraw their affidavit concerning the shrine’s customs and traditions?”
Furthermore, Satheesan criticized the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), an organization established in 1949, for its plans to host a ‘Global Ayyappa Sangamam’ as part of its platinum jubilee. He also accused the LDF government of deliberately withholding essential annual funds owed to the TDB.
The significant political gathering saw the attendance of several prominent Congress leaders, including Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, K.C. Joseph, and MP Francis George, among others.
