A group of 19 United States Congress members has formally addressed President Donald Trump, urging him to take prompt action to mend the increasingly strained relationship between the U.S. and India. This appeal comes in the wake of recent tariff measures, implemented under Trump’s leadership, which the lawmakers contend have created negative consequences for both nations. The letter specifically references tariff increases initiated in late August 2025, part of the ‘Make America Great Again’ agenda.
The lawmakers highlighted that Donald Trump’s administration imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods in two phases. The initial 25% “reciprocal” tariff was followed by an additional 25% penalty on India for its purchases of Russian oil. According to the letter, these punitive measures have not only harmed Indian manufacturers but have also led to higher prices for American consumers and disrupted crucial supply chains upon which American companies rely.
Emphasizing the significance of the bilateral trade partnership, the letter stated that it is “exceptionally important, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in both countries.” American manufacturers depend on India for essential inputs across various sectors, including semiconductors, healthcare, and energy. Furthermore, American firms investing in India gain access to one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets. Conversely, Indian companies have invested billions in the U.S., contributing to job creation and economic opportunities.
The U.S. lawmakers expressed concern that the escalating and indiscriminate nature of these tariffs jeopardizes these vital ties. They argue that this policy increases costs for American families, hinders the competitiveness of American companies on a global scale, and undermines innovation and cooperation between the two nations.
The letter reportedly garnered signatures from prominent representatives, including Deborah K Ross, Ro Khanna, Brad Sherman, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Pramila Jayapal, and Frank Pallone Jr., among others. Many of these representatives serve districts with significant Indian-American populations, underscoring the diverse support for strengthening U.S.-India relations.
