Sergio Gor, the designated US Ambassador to India, recently held significant meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. This visit marks Gor’s first trip to India since his confirmation for the crucial diplomatic role.
Gor’s appointment by President Donald Trump was announced in August, shortly before the US implemented additional tariffs on India. His visit occurs at a time of ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States. Key topics discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Modi included trade, defense cooperation, and critical minerals.
Reflecting on the relationship between the two leaders, Gor stated that President Trump considers PM Modi a “great personal friend.” He further elaborated that Trump and Modi had an “incredible phone call” just before Gor’s departure for New Delhi, highlighting the warm personal connection that is expected to continue.
Following his discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Gor expressed optimism about the meeting, noting a “positive exchange on a host of issues.” He stated his eagerness to collaborate with Jaishankar to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations, aiming for enhanced security and prosperity.
Gor’s remarks come in the context of evolving India-US relations, particularly in light of President Trump’s imposition of tariffs. Some of these tariffs were reportedly linked to India’s continued oil trade with Russia, an area where Washington has been urging for reduced engagement.
Adding a personal touch, Gor carried a photograph for Prime Minister Modi, bearing Trump’s handwritten message: “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.” This gesture underscores the positive rapport between the two leaders, which has seen a notable resurgence following a recent call between them where Trump reiterated his friendship with Modi, despite expressing reservations about certain trade practices.
