Dr. Rakesh Policepatil, an Assistant Professor in Psychology at the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), recently underscored a crucial point: true health encompasses far more than just physical fitness. He emphasized that mental well-being is equally, if not more, vital for a complete and healthy life.
Speaking at an event in Kalaburagi for World Mental Health Day, organized by Smt. Veeramma Gangasiri Women’s Degree College’s Department of Psychology, Dr. Policepatil addressed an important societal trend. He observed that in our fast-paced modern world, there’s a strong focus on maintaining physical shape, often at the expense of our mental state.
He articulated that genuine health isn’t solely about bodily strength. Instead, it’s a holistic blend that includes inner peace, emotional stability, and the capacity to live harmoniously within society. Dr. Policepatil pointed out that the relentless demands of contemporary life, such as rapid technological changes, intense competition, and persistent work-related pressures, are significantly impacting our mental landscape.
It’s common, he noted, for individuals to possess a strong and active body while their minds are overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and stress. This imbalance can lead to serious issues like depression, a decline in self-confidence, heightened anger, persistent frustration, and a sense of isolation. These challenges don’t just affect the individual; they ripple outwards, impacting their families and the broader community. Therefore, prioritizing mental health isn’t a luxury, but an absolute necessity for everyone seeking a healthy and meaningful existence.
The event also featured Dilip Kumar S. Navale, a Psychologist from the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalaburagi, who delved into the profound impact of mental health and social psychology on fostering a healthy society.
Adding to the discussion, Chhaya Patil, Head of the Department of Psychology, highlighted that World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10, serves as a vital platform to raise global awareness about mental health challenges and cultivate empathy for those battling mental illnesses. She revealed that the theme for World Mental Health Day 2025 is specifically focused on ‘Ensuring Mental Health Services in Times of Crisis and Emergencies’.
The program was overseen by College Principal Rajendra Konda, with Vice-Principal Veena Honaguntikar also in attendance.
