G. Kumar Naik, the Lok Sabha Member representing Raichur, passionately called upon persons with disabilities (PWDs) to fully embrace and utilize the comprehensive welfare schemes provided by both the central and state governments. He stressed that these programs are designed specifically for their empowerment and inclusion.
His remarks came during the inauguration of the ‘Nerale Mela’ – a vibrant employment and awareness fair dedicated to PWDs, which also featured engaging sports and cultural activities. The event took place at the auditorium of the Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Thursday.
Mr. Naik elaborated on the government’s extensive efforts, noting the introduction of numerous schemes aimed at offering professional training, meaningful employment, vital social security, and ensuring equal rights for PWDs. This initiative, he explained, is crucial for integrating them seamlessly into society. He affirmed, ‘By providing educational assistance, job prospects, skill development, and essential assistive devices, the government is committed to fostering an environment where every person with a disability can thrive with dignity and respect.’
Emphasizing the distinctive nature of the ‘Nerale Mela’, Mr. Naik proudly stated that while the event is celebrated nationwide, its presence in Karnataka is exclusive to Raichur and Yadgir. ‘This is truly a point of pride for us,’ he shared. However, he also candidly addressed regional challenges, acknowledging, ‘Our area still faces significant hurdles in health and education, particularly with high maternal and infant mortality rates, which we are determined to reduce.’
Given Raichur district’s substantial population of individuals with disabilities, he made a heartfelt appeal to local officials and various organizations, urging them to redouble their commitment and dedication in providing essential services.
‘Life presents challenges for everyone,’ he observed. ‘It is imperative that persons with disabilities receive the care and respect they deserve, just like any other member of our community.’
Dr. Ramesh Babu, a psychiatrist at RIMS, shared a profound sentiment, stating that extending service to those in distress is, in essence, an act of divine service.
Parallel to the main event, an impactful exhibition of assistive devices for both PWDs and senior citizens took place on the RIMS campus. Approximately 15 organizations, including notable entities like the Composite Regional Centre (Davangere), CBM India Trust (Bengaluru), Samarthya, Out Bank, and Shri Manikyaprabhu Academy for the Blind (Raichur), proudly presented their innovative equipment and crucial services. The mela saw an impressive registration of 523 beneficiaries eager to explore these offerings.
Distinguished guests gracing the occasion included Pavan Kishore Patil, President of the Raichur Taluk Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee; Jayant Rao Patange, President of the Raichur Cooperative Society; Dr. Ramesh B.H., Director of RIMS; Sridevi, Disability Department officer; Dr. Rahul Keerthi, Principal of RIMS; Mallikarjun, Zonal Commissioner of Raichur City Corporation; Thamarai Selvan, Chief of CRC; and Dr. Kaushik Reddy, Principal of Navodaya Medical College. Their presence, alongside numerous students and senior citizens, underscored the community’s collective support.
