A collective of passionate readers and language advocates from Kozhikode has launched an innovative online directory, meticulously cataloging the principal characters found in renowned Malayalam novels.
This unique resource, named ‘Paathraavali’, is an extension of the existing Malayalam language and literature platform, thaalilakkam.in, founded by M.K. Praveen Varma, a retired schoolteacher from Balussery. The initial phase of this directory was inaugurated by celebrated Vayalar Award-winning author, U.K. Kumaran. The descriptions and content for ‘Paathraavali’ are meticulously prepared with significant contributions from Sargavedi, a respected literary and cultural forum also based in Balussery.
Praveen Varma emphasizes that this new initiative aims to broaden the reach of his five-year-old website, appealing to a wider audience. He highlighted its particular benefit for students, stating that it offers an accessible way for college and school-goers to engage with and understand key characters from esteemed Malayalam novels.
Accessible through the ‘Sahityam’ section and its ‘Puthiyava’ sub-section on the platform, ‘Paathraavali’ currently features character profiles from several acclaimed works. These include Agnisakshi by Lalithambika Antharjanam, Aathreyakam by R. Rajashree, Kalam and Manju by M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Kuda Nannakkunna Choyi by M. Mukundan, Khasakkinte Ithihasam by O.V. Vijayan, Diaspora by V. Suresh Kumar, Thakshankunnu Swaroopam by U.K. Kumaran, Pattunoolppuzhu by S. Hareesh, Manushyanu Oru Aamukham by Subhash Chandran, Maranavamsam by P.V. Shajikumar, Maria Verum Maria by Sandhya Mary, and Munpe Parakkunna Pakshikal by C. Radhakrishnan.
According to V.P. Elias, Secretary of Sargavedi, a dedicated team of at least 15 individuals, comprising both forum members and external contributors, has authored the character descriptions. The project involves a larger group of 50 to 60 people, with continuous additions planned. There are also intentions to involve undergraduate students, offering them valuable academic benefits. The ultimate goal is to compile an exhaustive collection covering the majority of significant Malayalam novels.
