Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna firmly stated on Friday, October 24, that political disagreements would not, under any circumstances, delay the completion of vital development projects across the nation.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the ongoing renovation efforts at Kozhikode railway station, Minister Somanna highlighted the Union government’s substantial commitment to Kerala’s railway infrastructure. He noted that the recent Union Budget allocated a remarkable ₹3,046 crore for railway development in the state, a significant jump from the ₹372 crore provided during the previous UPA administration.
The Minister emphasized the Central government’s robust support for expanding and modernizing rail infrastructure throughout Kerala. He mentioned that “numerous large and small railway stations in Kerala are currently undergoing upgrades with central funding,” and proudly added that extensive electrification projects have been successfully completed across various routes, leading to improved operational efficiency and service quality.
Mr. Somanna also reported rapid progress in the construction of several new railway overbridges, alongside ongoing surveys for future railway lines. Specifically for Kozhikode, he detailed that projects totaling ₹446 crore are actively underway to elevate the city’s railway station into a modern, world-class hub offering enhanced passenger facilities.
Furthermore, he highlighted the introduction of two Vande Bharat Express trains in Kerala as a major achievement, significantly transforming the train travel experience. This initiative, he explained, underscores the Centre’s dedication to boosting passenger comfort and connectivity within the state.
Throughout his visit, the Minister engaged in discussions with high-ranking Railway officials, closely monitoring the advancement of several ongoing projects. He also received a memorandum from the Malabar Chamber of Commerce, detailing requests for improved railway amenities in the Malabar region, which he assured would receive careful consideration.
