In a startling security breach, an undertrial prisoner successfully escaped from the Soro sub-jail in Odisha’s Balasore district, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Sub-jailer Bailochan Das identified the escapee as Deepak Ray, 30, a resident of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Ray, who was arrested on theft charges just days earlier on October 19, 2025, made his audacious getaway on Tuesday evening. According to officials, he used a blanket to scale the prison wall and flee the premises.
The alarm was raised during a routine roll call after dinner when jail staff discovered Ray’s absence. Sub-jailer Das promptly filed a complaint with the local police, initiating a comprehensive search operation to apprehend the escaped prisoner.
This incident is not isolated, as it follows another significant security lapse earlier this month. On October 2, 2025, two other undertrial prisoners, both from Bihar, had also managed to escape from the high-security Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack district. These recurring escapes highlight persistent challenges in maintaining robust prison security across the state.
