The wife of the acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg, Garima Saikia Garg, along with his sister, Palme Borthakur, has publicly called for full transparency regarding the events leading to his passing in Singapore in September 2025. They are vehemently demanding justice and clarity for the beloved artist.
In a heartfelt post on her Facebook page, Ms. Garima expressed her profound grief and determination: “Goldie (as Zubeen was affectionately known to his family), we will be together again, very soon. But before that, I, and all of us, urgently need to understand the true circumstances of your physical departure. Why? This unanswered question burns in my heart day and night, and I demand an explanation.”
Echoing her sister-in-law’s sentiments, Zubeen’s sister shared her own poignant message on social media: “You’ll call me ‘Momon’ again when we reunite on the other side… For now, our sole mission is to secure justice for you.” She passionately appealed to the public for emotional support and assistance in their quest for truth.
Notably, on October 4, 2025, the singer’s wife returned the second post-mortem examination report, which had been conducted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, to the government. She clarified that the report was not her “personal document” and that investigators were best positioned to determine if it should be made public.
In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Monday, October 6, 2025, that making the post-mortem report public directly by the government is prohibited by law. He added that a certified copy could, however, be obtained through the Court.
Regarding the ongoing investigation into Zubeen’s death, several individuals have been arrested. These include Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.
Over 60 First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged statewide against Mahanta, Sharma, and other implicated parties. Consequently, the Chief Minister instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to consolidate all cases under the CID for a comprehensive investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, was formed to delve into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death while he was swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19, 2025.
The SIT previously issued summons to various individuals connected to Zubeen, notably eight of the eleven members from the Assam Association of Singapore who were present with him on the yacht during his final moments. They were directed to appear before the SIT by October 6, 2025.
As of Monday, October 6, 2025, the deadline for their appearance passed without any of the association members reporting to the SIT. However, one individual, Rupkamal Kalita, has since notified the CID that he intends to appear on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
