Chennai: Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin took stock of the city’s preparations for the impending North East Monsoon by visiting the Command and Control Centre on Wednesday. The inspection aimed to ensure all ground-level arrangements are in place to manage the monsoon season effectively.
Following recent intermittent showers in Chennai and surrounding areas, with Ennore recording the highest rainfall of 136.50 mm and Ambattur receiving 0.30 mm in the preceding 24 hours, the Deputy CM reviewed the city’s status. Areas under the Greater Chennai Corporation saw approximately 38.19 mm of rainfall during the same period.
During his visit, Stalin utilized LED screens at the Command and Control Centre to observe traffic conditions across the city’s 22 subways, confirming smooth movement. He also monitored the water flow in canals and at the estuary near Nappier Bridge.
In a meeting with Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran, Chennai Mayor R Priya, and other senior officials, Stalin discussed crucial preparatory measures for the North East Monsoon. Officials informed him that 1,436 motor pumps, including 150 high-HP units and 500 tractor-mounted pumps, are on standby. Additionally, 478 vehicles and specialized equipment, such as amphibious and robotic excavators, super sucker vehicles, and 489 tree-cutting machines, are ready for deployment.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has also been proactive, having constructed 1,217 km of rainwater drainage systems and desilted nearly 1,136 km of canals over the past four years. The corporation has established 193 relief centers and 150 kitchens, with special medical camps planned in anticipation of the rainy season. To ensure public safety, 103 boats are on standby for potential evacuations from low-lying areas to relief camps during heavy rainfall.
Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasized the importance of promptly addressing public complaints and ensuring that actions taken are communicated to the concerned individuals. He urged officials and staff to work collaboratively and with dedication to execute the necessary tasks effectively.
