Trump’s Shifting Stance: From “You Are Great” Gift to Tariffs and India-Pakistan Ceasefire Claims

October 13, 2025
in National
Reading Time: 3 min

In a curious turn of events, US President Donald Trump has once again asserted his role in de-escalating a potential India-Pakistan conflict, a claim he has made multiple times previously. This assertion came shortly after he sent Prime Minister Narendra Modi a framed photograph with a handwritten message calling him “great.” This juxtaposition of personal warmth and economic pressure reveals Trump’s dynamic and often contradictory diplomatic style.

Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed that imposing significant tariffs – potentially 100%, 150%, or even 200% – on both India and Pakistan was instrumental in settling a conflict that involved nuclear-armed nations, asserting it was resolved within 24 hours due to the threat of these tariffs. India, however, has maintained its stance that no third-party mediation influenced its decisions regarding the ceasefire in Kashmir.

Trump’s repeated claims about resolving international disputes, including the India-Pakistan situation, have been part of his narrative, even leading to suggestions that he was seeking a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Reports suggest that India’s reluctance to engage in such mediation may have contributed to Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, despite his often-expressed admiration for Prime Minister Modi.

The US President’s approach to India has been marked by considerable oscillation. While he has frequently praised Modi as a “great” and “personal” friend, his administration has also implemented measures like the H-1B visa fee increase, which significantly impacted Indian tech professionals. Trump has also been critical of India’s trade practices and its oil dealings with Russia, even imposing sanctions.

Meanwhile, India has largely adopted a diplomatic approach, focusing on progress and promoting domestic goods, while avoiding direct confrontation. This strategy has been evident in its response to US trade policies and geopolitical criticisms.

The recent exchange, beginning with a personal gift and followed by renewed tariff threats and conflict resolution claims, underscores the complex and often unpredictable nature of US-India relations under the Trump administration. The situation highlights the blend of personal diplomacy and economic leverage that characterizes Trump’s foreign policy.
