Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador-designate to India, shared a positive outlook on the Indo-US relationship following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gor revealed that President Donald Trump personally considers Prime Minister Modi to be “a great and personal friend.” This statement comes after an “incredible meeting” where Gor and the Prime Minister discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation such as defense, trade, and technology.
During the meeting in Delhi, Gor presented Prime Minister Modi with a framed photograph of himself and President Trump at the White House. The photo was accompanied by a personal message and signature from President Trump, reading, “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.” Gor is currently in India for a six-day visit, accompanied by Michael J Rigas, the deputy secretary for management and resources, to engage with senior Indian officials.
Prime Minister Modi also shared his positive sentiment on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), expressing confidence that Gor’s tenure would further strengthen the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US. He stated, “Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”
In addition to his meeting with the Prime Minister, Gor also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. These meetings focused on enhancing the bilateral strategic partnership and aligning on shared priorities. Gor’s visit is viewed as a key step in the US administration’s efforts to bolster the relationship between the two nations. He had previously emphasized India’s importance as a strategic partner whose future trajectory will significantly shape the region and beyond during his confirmation hearing in the US Senate.
