Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the influential supremo of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), has publicly declared his party’s readiness to withdraw from the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) coalition government in Tripura. The ultimatum comes with a clear condition: if the fundamental rights of the indigenous ‘Tiprasa’ people are not secured, TMP will part ways with the ruling alliance.
Currently, the Tripura Assembly comprises 60 members. The BJP holds 33 seats, while the TMP commands 13. The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) has one legislator, forming a key part of the political landscape.
Addressing a party gathering in Karbook, Gomati district, recently on Wednesday, Mr. Debbarma recalled a crucial assurance given by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured us of an agreement for the development of the Tiprasa people. I have personally met him and urged for the implementation of the Tiprasa accord. How much longer must we wait for our rightful claims?” he questioned. The TMP had previously finalized an agreement with both the Central and State governments in March 2024, focusing on the development of the Tiprasa community.
Mr. Debbarma emphasized his resolve, stating, “I want to reiterate that we will quit if our rights are not granted. The TMP is not just a political entity; it’s a mission dedicated to the vision of Greater Tipraland. Unlike the IPFT, which might endure in alliance with the BJP for years without achieving power or rights, we will not linger indefinitely.”
Highlighting his heritage, Mr. Debbarma proudly asserted his lineage as the grandson of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, declaring that neither he nor the Tiprasa people are beggars. He also issued a direct challenge to other political factions, asserting, “No political parties—be it the BJP, the Congress, or the CPI(M)—will be able to secure the votes of the Tiprasa people in the upcoming elections. If you attempt to buy Tiprasa votes with money, I will ensure it is taken away.”
