In a deeply unfortunate incident, a bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire near Kurnool city in Andhra Pradesh, claiming the lives of at least 20 passengers. The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Friday on National Highway 44. The bus, operated by Kaveri Travels, was carrying 44 people when the devastating fire broke out around 3:30 AM.
What Led to the Disaster?
Initial reports suggest the bus collided with a motorcycle, dragging it beneath the vehicle. This impact ruptured the motorcycle’s fuel tank, causing an immediate explosion and a rapid spread of flames throughout the bus. Authorities also indicated that a short circuit may have jammed the bus doors, preventing passengers from escaping quickly. The vehicle was consumed by fire within minutes.
The Human Toll
The accident happened while most passengers were asleep, making escape extremely difficult. Those who were awake or managed to wake up amidst the chaos were able to break windows to flee the inferno. Survivors are predominantly between the ages of 25 and 35. Tragically, two children and the two bus drivers also perished in the blaze. The bus drivers reportedly abandoned the vehicle immediately after the accident, and police are actively searching for them. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
Rescue Efforts and Official Condolences
Local residents were alerted by the screams of passengers and rushed to the scene to assist in rescue efforts before emergency services arrived. Four fire engines from Kurnool worked to control the blaze, but the bus was reduced to ashes. Injured passengers were transported to Kurnool Government General Hospital. Preliminary findings indicate that most of the passengers were from Hyderabad. President Droupadi Murmu and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu have expressed their deep sorrow and extended condolences to the affected families, directing authorities to provide all necessary medical care and support.
Forensic teams are working to identify the victims, with DNA tests expected in cases where identification is challenging. The incident has cast a somber mood over Kurnool and Hyderabad as families anxiously await news of their loved ones.
