In a deeply disturbing event in Durgapur, West Bengal, a 23-year-old medical student fell victim to a heinous crime on Friday night. The student, who is in her second year of medical studies and hails from Jaleswar in Odisha, was reportedly out for dinner near her college campus around 8:30 PM with a male friend.
According to police reports, the couple was approached by three unidentified men. The attackers allegedly snatched the student’s phone and dragged her into a nearby jungle, where the horrific act of gangrape took place. She was also reportedly threatened against reporting the incident, and the perpetrators demanded money for the return of her mobile phone.
Investigation Underway
The student is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Her parents, alerted by a friend, arrived in Durgapur on Saturday morning. They have shared their anguish, with the student’s father expressing his rationale for choosing the college based on its academic reputation.
Police have recorded the victim’s statement and are actively searching for CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the crime scene. The friend who was with the victim has also been questioned.
National Commission for Women Takes Notice
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the incident and is sending a team to Durgapur to meet with the victim and her parents. An NCW member voiced concerns about the rising crime rate against women in Bengal and urged the state government to take proactive measures.
