A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Hyderabad’s Madhura Nagar, where a 76-year-old retired government doctor tragically passed away from a cardiac arrest. She had been ensnared in a cruel ‘digital arrest’ scam, losing ₹6.6 lakh to cyber fraudsters who impersonated law enforcement and held her under virtual confinement for a harrowing 70 hours.
The elaborate scheme began on September 5 when the unsuspecting victim received a call from individuals falsely identifying themselves as Bengaluru police. They leveled grave accusations against her, including fabricated charges of human trafficking, and presented fraudulent documents allegedly from the Supreme Court, Reserve Bank of India, and the Enforcement Directorate. Through relentless intimidation and threats, they manipulated her into transferring a significant sum into a bogus account.
This continuous, high-pressure harassment reportedly plunged the elderly doctor into immense distress. She eventually collapsed at her Madhura Nagar home, suffering from severe chest pain. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, her life could not be saved.
Investigators from the Hyderabad cybercrime wing confirmed that the family firmly believes the overwhelming stress inflicted by the fraud directly contributed to her demise. Following a formal complaint from her son, authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into this tragic incident.
