A horrific accident unfolded in Agra on Saturday when a speeding car, reportedly driven by an engineer under the influence of alcohol, struck a group of pedestrians, tragically claiming five lives and injuring two others.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shesh Mani Upadhyay, the victims who sustained critical injuries were promptly transported to Sarojini Naidu Medical College. Sadly, medical professionals pronounced all five deceased upon arrival due to the severity of their injuries.
The five individuals who lost their lives have been identified as Babli (33), Bhanu Pratap (25), Kamal (23), Krish (20), and Bantesh (21). Bhanu Pratap was employed as a parcel delivery agent, while Kamal and Krish were close friends. Krish was reportedly preparing to travel to Delhi the following day.
The tragic event took place in the New Agra police station area, near Nagla Budhi, close to the Central Hindi Institute.
Sources within the police department have identified the driver as Anshu Gupta (40), a resident of Agra. It is understood that Gupta, an engineer working for a private firm in Noida, had returned to his hometown for the Diwali holidays.
Initial investigations strongly suggest that Gupta was intoxicated at the time of the incident. An eyewitness recounted that the car was traveling at a high speed, first colliding with the road divider before veering off and hitting the people who were on the roadside.
In total, seven people were hit by the vehicle. While five succumbed to their injuries, two others, identified as Rahul and Golu, are currently receiving medical treatment, as confirmed by the police.
The driver has been apprehended, and the vehicle involved in the accident has been seized by the authorities. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
