A recent tragedy has sent shockwaves across West Bengal, as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was reportedly beaten to death in the Nadia district on Thursday night. This grim incident has immediately ignited a fierce political dispute between the BJP and the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The victim, identified as 40-year-old Sanjay Bhowmik, suffered a brutal assault in Nabadwip and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. His family has voiced serious allegations, claiming that one of the individuals involved in the attack is Tarak Das, who previously worked as a driver for Nabadwip Trinamool MLA Pundarikaksha Saha. According to the family, Mr. Bhowmik was targeted when he attempted to intervene in a local altercation.
Sanjay Bhowmik’s mother, speaking to reporters, emotionally recounted, “They had beaten my son once before. The Trinamool workers frequently gathered in this neighborhood club room, creating disturbances while drinking.” A distraught relative further amplified the family’s plea, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter and advocating for capital punishment for those responsible.
Adding fuel to the political fire, prominent BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, shared photographic evidence allegedly linking another accused, Gadhadar Ray, to Trinamool MLA Mukut Mani Adhikari. Mr. Adhikari sternly asserted, “Almost three hundred BJP workers have been tragically killed in this State… The Trinamool is clearly attempting to establish a reign of terror.”
Senior BJP figure Arjun Singh issued a stark warning of potential retaliation, while the Trinamool Congress vehemently rejected the allegations. “Any death is truly regrettable. The police must conduct a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the genuine perpetrators,” stated Mr. Mukut Mani Adhikari.
However, Nabadwip Police Station officer-in-charge Jaleswar Tewari provided an initial assessment, stating that the preliminary inquiry had not yet indicated any political motive behind the crime. He assured the public, “We are committed to arresting those responsible as quickly as possible.”
