A profound tragedy has cast a somber shadow over Karur, Tamil Nadu, following a political rally addressed by popular actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president, Vijay. On Saturday, September 27, 2025, at least ten individuals, including three young children, tragically lost their lives after collapsing amidst a massive crowd surge at the event, as confirmed by hospital authorities.
The rally, a significant stop in Mr. Vijay’s ongoing statewide tour, drew an enormous gathering of supporters. However, what began as an enthusiastic assembly quickly turned chaotic. As the crowd swelled and surged, numerous attendees reportedly fainted due to the intense pressure and commotion. Emergency services swiftly responded, transporting those affected to Karur Medical College Hospital and various nearby private medical facilities for immediate care.
Providing an initial update, Karur Medical College Hospital dean R. Shanthimalar stated, “Currently, we have confirmed seven adult fatalities and three children among the deceased. The situation remains fluid, with more ambulances continually arriving, and we require additional time to fully ascertain the complete scale of the incident.”
Hospital sources further indicated that a considerable number of individuals are presently receiving treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition. Authorities are diligently working to determine the precise count of all those impacted by this devastating crowd surge.
