A profound tragedy unfolded on Sunday morning at Payyambalam Beach in Kannur, as three pharmacy students from Karnataka lost their lives in a drowning incident.
The victims have been identified as Mohammed Afnan Ahmed, Mohammad Rehanuddin, and Afras Mohammed. All three were DPharma students who were undertaking their internships.
Police reports indicate that the group ventured into the sea for a swim early in the day when one of the students was pulled away by the powerful ocean currents. In a heroic but ultimately fatal attempt, his two friends rushed to his aid, only to be overwhelmed by the same relentless currents.
According to local residents, the students had entered a section of the beach that is generally avoided for swimming due to its notorious strong undercurrents. Despite immediate rescue efforts, which involved both lifeguards and local fishermen, the three young men could not be saved.
Authorities in Kannur have registered a case, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event is currently in progress.
