PANAJI: Tragedy struck a private shipyard in South Goa on Friday when an explosion claimed the lives of two workers and left four others with severe injuries. The incident is believed to have occurred around 6 pm on an under-repair ship at the Vijai Marine Services Shipyard.
Leading firefighter Antonio Moniz reported that emergency services were alerted shortly after the blast. Upon arrival, the injured had already been transported to the hospital. The explosion is suspected to have originated from the electrical panel on the anchor deck of the vessel, which was undergoing repairs after a paint job. The two workers who tragically lost their lives were employed on a daily wage basis.
The 160-meter vessel was nearing the completion of its work and had recently been lowered back into the water. Firefighters emphasized that a thorough investigation would be necessary to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Revenue official Naguesh Naik confirmed the fatalities and stated that the four injured individuals sustained 80% burn injuries and are in critical condition. He also noted that one person had been discharged from the hospital.
Officials from Vijai Marine Services have not yet provided any comments despite repeated attempts to reach them for information.
