A tragic stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, has led to the unfortunate loss of at least 10 lives and left several others injured. The incident occurred on Saturday during a period of heavy devotee turnout.
In response to the distressing event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences, stating he was “pained” by the stampede and offering prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. The Prime Minister’s Office announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the kin of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for the injured, to be disbursed from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
Union Minister Amit Shah also expressed his shock over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased devotees. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to ensure that the injured receive prompt and adequate medical treatment and has requested local representatives to oversee relief efforts at the site.
State Minister Lokesh Nara echoed these sentiments, speaking with local officials and Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu to ensure immediate assistance for those affected. Minister Atchannaidu visited the incident site and met with the grieving families, also visiting the injured in the hospital to offer comfort and ensure they receive the best possible care.
