During a recent event in Srinagar, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly advocated for lasting peace within the Union Territory. He pointed out that ensuring security is primarily the responsibility of designated authorities, not solely the elected government.
Speaking after the unveiling of Real Kashmir FC’s unique “Peace Jersey,” Mr. Abdullah stated, “Upholding peace is the duty of the relevant authorities, not my administration, and those entrusted with this task must diligently carry it out.”
His comments were seen as an indirect message to the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant-Governor, who oversees the region’s security apparatus.
Abdullah emphasized that peace is absolutely essential for fostering development, boosting tourism, and promoting sports activities. He elaborated, “Peace is indispensable. Consider the proposed day-night match; if the prevailing atmosphere isn’t conducive, who would want to participate in the evening? Peace is fundamental to every aspect of progress.”
Commenting on the newly launched jersey, Abdullah highlighted its significance: “The jersey’s design beautifully honors Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and its hopes for the future. It draws inspiration from the iconic Hari Parbat Fort—a powerful emblem of communal harmony, home to a shrine, a temple, and a gurdwara. The kit’s sky-blue color symbolizes peace and tranquility.”
He further affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure throughout Jammu and Kashmir, adding, “Sports serve as a crucial pathway to peace. Ensuring this responsibility falls upon everyone involved.”
