D.T. Chandrasekar, the 32-year-old left-arm spinner, is ecstatic about his unexpected return to the Ranji squad this season. His last appearance for Tamil Nadu in a Ranji match was back in December 2015, with a brief squad inclusion in 2018.
“After a strong showing in the TNCA first division league last season, I had hoped for a spot in the Buchi Babu tournament, but it didn’t happen. So, my expectations weren’t high this year,” Chandrasekar shared in a recent phone conversation. “However, when I was selected for TNCA XI, I knew that if I performed well, I’d have a legitimate shot at the Ranji squad.”
His stellar performances in the recent Buchi Babu tournament certainly caught the selectors’ attention, featuring two impressive five-wicket hauls: six for 83 against Bengal and five for 67 against Haryana.
Chandrasekar emphasized that his years of unwavering dedication, particularly his consistent form over the past three to four seasons, have finally culminated in this significant call-up.
Currently playing for Sea Hawks, Chandrasekar stands as the leading wicket-taker in the TNCA first division league this season, boasting an incredible 38 wickets. His season highlights include a remarkable 10-wicket haul (10 for 37 against Globe Trotters) and three additional five-wicket hauls across just ten innings. He credits these exceptional results to the crucial work he undertook with bowling coach R. Ramkumar during his time with Jolly Rovers in 2023.
Ramkumar’s guidance proved transformative, helping Chandrasekar refine his grip from a ‘fingertip’ hold to a more effective grip at the ‘first joint’ from the fingertips. This seemingly minor adjustment dramatically improved his control and ability to generate spin. Under Ramkumar, he also honed his mastery of overspin (which bounces and turns slightly) and topspin (which bounces and goes straight). These, along with his reliable arm ball and sidespin, now form a complete and versatile bowling repertoire.
Reflecting on these improvements, Chandrasekar noted, “The number of wickets I’ve taken has significantly increased since working with Ramkumar. I’m now picking up an additional 15-20 wickets per season. With this newfound variety, I’m confident I can perform effectively on any wicket. Previously, I lacked this level of clarity and assurance.”
