While the sheer diversity of these games faces ongoing challenges, it certainly hasn’t been extinguished.
However, for anyone seeking to experience the true breadth of video games across various genres and styles on a single platform, the PlayStation 2 might still be the ultimate choice.
The PS2’s incredible variety stood in stark contrast to its contemporary rivals. While the Nintendo GameCube boasted several bona fide classics, most were first-party productions. Microsoft’s original Xbox, meanwhile, is primarily remembered for defining the era of Halo LAN parties and early Xbox Live social gaming.
The PlayStation 2, however, was home to an extraordinary collection of titles that often transcended their console origins. It was the platform that propelled Grand Theft Auto into a global phenomenon and is fondly associated with the iconic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, even though those titles appeared on other consoles. It birthed the beloved Kingdom Hearts saga and ignited Persona’s immense popularity in Western markets, foreshadowing future successes like Metaphor: ReFantazio. The PS2’s profound impact on popularizing gaming and shaping its future trajectory is truly immeasurable.
Beyond the blockbusters, the PS2 embraced the unusual and profoundly unique. Titles like Rule of Rose remain among the most bizarre and thought-provoking survival horror experiences, holding their own against genre giants like Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 4. It also introduced players to Drakengard, a disturbing and arduous trek through a dark fantasy realm. Iconic games such as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were quietly revolutionary, influencing modern masterpieces like The Last of Us and God of War (2018). Yet, there’s a distinct grandeur and magic to these PS2 originals, a poetic minimalism seemingly inherent to the console’s architecture. Playing Shadow of the Colossus on an original PS2 vividly demonstrates the hardware pushing against its ambitious vision, a quality that amplifies its majesty rather than diminishing it.
On this same console, the eccentric and existential Katamari Damacy found widespread appeal, while Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame III: The Tormented drove the medium toward a narrative and thematic maturity it still strives to fully embody. Games like Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty explored metafiction and questioned gaming’s core tenets long before BioShock and Spec Ops: The Line tackled similar themes. While the PS2 undoubtedly built upon prior innovations, the sheer scope of what it established and foreshadowed is truly astonishing.
However, this retrospective view naturally comes with the luxury of hindsight. I’m no longer eagerly seeking out interesting Japanese games hoping for an eventual Western release, nor am I limited to store shelves filled with uninspired tie-ins and repetitive sports titles. I’m not an aspiring developer wrestling with the challenges of creating something truly original within the industry. Instead, I’ve experienced most PS2 games through friends, budget finds at local stores, or alternative means, and I now have access to English translations of titles never officially released in my region. This romanticized view of the PS2 is undeniably a product of revisiting it from a modern perspective. Many of my frustrations with the current gaming landscape can indeed be traced back to its era. With so many unique and captivating experiences readily available today, why should we even feel nostalgic?

A significant factor is that the PS2 era predated the modern trend of games designed to monopolize players’ lives. Widespread internet connectivity on consoles was still nascent, meaning few titles offered continuous online updates. While exceptions like Final Fantasy XI and Phantasy Star Online existed, even they lacked the relentless monetization and engagement strategies pervasive in today’s free-to-play online games. This model, though rooted in PC gaming, has since become ubiquitous.
Furthermore, the PS2’s affordability throughout its lifespan contributed to its widespread adoption. It eventually became so inexpensive that it achieved unparalleled ubiquity, solidifying its place as the best-selling console in history. It even sold over a million units in late 2012, shortly before its discontinuation. For years, major franchises like FIFA and Final Fantasy XI continued to release new installments on the console. In Brazil, it remains remarkably popular, largely due to modded systems running pirated games. This makes Sony’s subsequent shift to expensive, premium hardware with the PlayStation 3 seem all the more perplexing and, for some, disappointing.
In essence, the PS2 was an affordable console boasting an immense and incredibly diverse game library, positioned precisely at the dawn of a new online era – an era it both anticipated and cleverly sidestepped. While it wasn’t the end of great video games, it marked the last period when mainstream titles truly felt dedicated to innovation beyond simple graphical enhancements. For most of its existence, even mainstream PS2 games felt vast, peculiar, and genuinely audacious. This is a legacy worth both celebrating and, in some ways, mourning.
