According to the recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Telangana registered 1,83,644 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) in 2023, accounting for 2.9% of India’s total crimes. This marks a noticeable increase from the 1,65,830 cases reported in 2022. The NCRB released this comprehensive report on September 30.
Telangana secured the eighth position among Indian states for total reported crimes. Uttar Pradesh led the nation with 7,93,020 cases (12.7%), followed by Maharashtra at 5,96,103 (9.6%), Kerala with 5,84,373 (9.4%), Tamil Nadu with 5,39,651 (8.6%), Madhya Pradesh with 4,95,708 (7.9%), Bihar with 3,53,502 (5.7%), and Karnataka with 2,14,234 (3.4%).
The state’s charge-sheeting rate in 2023 stood at 77.4%, which is slightly below the national average of 80.1%. Kerala reported one of the highest rates at 97.9%, while Delhi recorded the lowest at 32.8%.
Focusing on metropolitan areas, Hyderabad alone accounted for 25,749 cases in 2023, representing 2.7% of all crimes reported across 19 major cities. With a crime rate of 332.3 per lakh population, Hyderabad falls into the mid-range among these metros. Delhi, however, saw a massive 3,43,483 cases, making up 36.3% of metro crimes, while Kochi reported the highest crime rate at an alarming 3,192.4.
Telangana ranked second among metropolitan states for violent crimes, recording 10,069 incidents in 2023. This indicates a 4.1% increase from the 9,673 cases in 2022, with the state contributing 2.3% to the country’s total violent crimes.
Specific crime categories showed varied trends: murder cases slightly increased to 954 from 937 in 2022, while attempted murder cases rose to 1,605. Grievous hurt incidents were 1,480, and kidnapping and abduction cases totaled 3,174. Robberies accounted for 526 cases, representing 2.7% of India’s 19,169 total. Arson cases reached 569, making up 4.5% of the national count, although rioting saw a slight decrease to 502 incidents.
Positively, crimes against children in Telangana dropped to 2,211 from 2,312 in 2022, contributing 2.3% of India’s 95,468 such cases. Tragically, negligent road accident deaths amounted to 7,797, with an additional 1,634 individuals being victims of hit-and-run incidents.
In Hyderabad specifically, violent crimes increased to 1,483, up from 1,364 in 2022. Kidnapping and abduction cases were 592, significantly higher than Chennai (27) and Kolkata (281), though still considerably lower than Delhi (5,867). The city reported 173 rape cases, surpassing Chennai (20) and Kolkata (10) but remaining well below Delhi (1,088). Robberies totaled 102, contributing 1.3% of all metro robberies.
Crimes against children in Hyderabad also rose to 724 from 681 the previous year, accounting for 3.6% of metropolitan cases. The city’s figures were higher than Chennai (551) and Kolkata (228), but still behind Bengaluru (1,042) and Mumbai (1,038).
The NCRB identified Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Hyderabad as the top metropolitan cities for violent crimes in 2023.
