Telangana has laid out an ambitious plan to attract an astounding ₹1 lakh crore (approximately $12 billion USD) in new investments within its burgeoning life sciences sector by 2030. This significant announcement was made by IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu during his keynote address at the prestigious AusBiotech International Conference 2025 in Melbourne, Australia.
These substantial investments are projected to create approximately five lakh (500,000) new job opportunities, further bolstering the region’s economy and its workforce.
Next Phase of Growth: A Strategic Vision
Minister Sridhar Babu detailed the State Government’s strategic approach for bio-digital driven growth. A new, comprehensive Life Sciences Policy is currently under development, designed to accelerate innovation, enhance infrastructure, and foster global partnerships. Furthermore, a detailed ‘Roadmap 2030’ has been crafted to firmly establish Telangana as a leading global hub for life sciences.
Key focus areas for Telangana include AI-based drug discovery, genomics, green biomanufacturing, agri-biotech, and animal health. These sectors present immense potential for collaborative ventures and value creation. The Minister extended a warm invitation to Australian companies, urging them to explore the numerous investment opportunities available in the State, particularly within high-growth domains such as cell and gene therapy, biologics, biosimilars, and contract research, development, and manufacturing. He highlighted that Telangana has already successfully attracted ₹3.2 lakh crore in new investments over the past 20 months, with ₹63,000 crore specifically flowing into the life sciences sector.
Forging the Victoria–Telangana Innovation Corridor
In a bold move, Telangana is also aspiring to boost its Life Sciences economy from its current valuation of $80 billion to an impressive $250 billion within this decade. Minister Babu assured robust support from the Telangana Government to all potential investors. He also proposed the establishment of a ‘Victoria–Telangana Innovation Corridor,’ as conveyed by his office in a statement regarding his speech.
A Flourishing Innovation Ecosystem
The true strength of Telangana lies in its vibrant innovation ecosystem. The Minister proudly stated, "Our slogan is not merely ‘Make in India’, but ‘Invent in Telangana’." The State is actively investing in cultivating a highly skilled, ready-to-deploy bio-digital workforce, essential for meeting the demands of cutting-edge technologies in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and healthcare. Initiatives such as the Life Sciences University and the Young India Skills University are pivotal steps in achieving this goal.
Hyderabad, the capital city, has rapidly emerged as a preferred destination for life science companies. It holds the distinction of being the only Indian city featured in CBRE’s Global Life Sciences Atlas 2025, standing alongside renowned global hubs like Boston, San Francisco, Cambridge, Beijing, and Tokyo. The city’s appeal is further underscored by the significant expansion in Life Sciences office leasing, which surged from 0.6 million sq. ft. in 2022 to a remarkable 2.4 million sq. ft. in 2024. This growth vividly demonstrates the sector’s rapid ascent and the strong confidence among investors.
