The Government of Telangana has announced a pivotal policy change, reserving 85% of Post Graduate (PG) Medical Management Quota–1 (MQ–1) seats in private medical colleges exclusively for local Telangana students. This move marks a significant shift in medical education access within the state.
Previously, these MQ–1 seats were part of the All-India category, allowing candidates from across the country to compete. Under the new framework, 85% of these coveted seats will now be allocated to Telangana residents, while the remaining 15% will continue to be available for All-India candidates.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made this crucial decision following a compelling representation from Minister for Health Damodar Rajanarasimha. This action addresses a decade-old demand from the state’s student community. The official Government Order (G.O.) to formalize this 85% local quota is expected to be issued very soon.
For the upcoming academic year 2025-26, Telangana’s 31 PG medical colleges offer a total of 2,983 seats. Of these, 741 fall under the PG medical management quota, with 374 specifically in the MQ-1 category. This new policy means that Telangana students will gain an additional 318 PG Medical seats and 70 PG Dental seats annually, a substantial increase given that approximately 60% of these seats were previously secured by non-local candidates.
