Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, has publicly conveyed his deep shock and profound sorrow regarding the tragic passing of senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar from Telangana, who died by suicide on October 7.
On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka visited the family of the late Additional DGP Puran Kumar in Chandigarh to offer his condolences. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also extended his sympathies by phone to Puran Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet, expressing profound solidarity with the grieving family. Both leaders assured her of the Telangana government’s unwavering support during this difficult time.
During his visit, Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka revealed that the departed officer had explicitly named two senior officials, DGP Kapoor and SP Narendra, accusing them of relentless humiliation and harassment. The Deputy CM questioned, “When such direct evidence exists, shouldn’t the government be legally obliged to take action?”
Despite these serious allegations, it has been seven days since the tragic incident, and neither the Haryana government nor the Chandigarh police have initiated any action against the named individuals, a fact that Mr. Vikramarka described as “extremely worrying.” He further condemned the “sheer cruelty and inhumanity” of preventing Kumar’s elderly mother, wife, and daughters from seeing his body, noting that even a post-mortem examination had not been performed. He asserted that these actions constitute “a gross violation of basic human rights.”
Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted Puran Kumar’s distinguished career, mentioning his roles as Additional DGP of Haryana and his service in the highly prestigious Research and Analysis Wing. He described Kumar as a highly accomplished officer, recognized with presidential medals for his exemplary contributions. The Deputy CM further alleged that DGP Kapoor had previously faced accusations of caste discrimination, yet was “shamefully” allowed to retain his position by the government.
