In a dramatic overnight operation spanning across Telangana, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted surprise raids on multiple Road Transport Authority (RTA) check posts, exposing a widespread and organized system of illegal cash collection. The meticulously planned raids, carried out during the intervening hours of October 18 and 19, revealed how RTA officials were allegedly extorting money from lorry drivers and transport operators.
The intensive operation was initiated following credible intelligence reports indicating that RTA personnel were illicitly collecting bribes. Instead of directly handling the cash, officials reportedly used private intermediaries to gather the funds and store them. Simultaneous raids were executed at key locations including Vishnupuram (Wadapalli) in Nalgonda, Kodad in Suryapet, Krishna in Narayanpet, Bhoraj in Adilabad, Bhainsa in Nirmal, Wankhidi in Komram Bheem–Asifabad, Salabatpoor-Maddunur and Pendurthy in Kamareddy, Zaheerabad in Sangareddy, Palvoncha and Aswaraopet in Bhadradri-Kothagudem, and Muthugudem (Penuballi) in Khammam district.
During the raids, ACB officers observed a clear pattern of corruption: lorry drivers were routinely compelled to pay cash to secure passage, indicating a deeply rooted and organized system of extortion. It was discovered that RTA staff were deliberately neglecting their official duties, allowing unauthorized agents to stop vehicles and collect these illegal payments on their behalf, perpetuating a cycle of misconduct.
The extensive operation culminated in the seizure of a staggering, unaccounted amount of ₹74,18,880. A comprehensive report detailing the findings and recommending stringent disciplinary and legal actions against all implicated officials is now being prepared for submission to the State government.
The ACB has reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and has called upon the public to play an active role. Citizens are encouraged to report any demands for bribes by government employees through their confidential toll-free number 1064, via WhatsApp at 9440446106, or by contacting the bureau on Facebook (Telangana ACB) and X (formerly Twitter) at @TelanganaACB. All complainants’ identities will be strictly protected to ensure their safety and encourage transparency.
