The All India Fisherman Congress is organizing a major protest on October 27th in front of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Chennai. This action comes in strong condemnation of the persistent arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.
S. Armstrong Fernando, national chairman of the All India Fisherman Congress, highlighted the severity of the situation. He stated that this year alone, the Sri Lankan Navy has seized over 30 boats and detained 180 fishermen. Fernando further alleged a significant increase in such incidents since 2014, when the BJP government took power. He claimed that in the past five years, charges have been brought against more than 200 boats, with 150 of these vessels reportedly nationalized by the Sri Lankan Navy and their parts, including wood, allegedly sold in Jaffna.
